VILLA PARK : City Delays Update in Fees for Services
Until it can find out what other cities charge, the City Council has put off updating fees for services.
City Manager Fred Maley said at this week’s council meeting that state law prohibits cities from charging more for services than the actual cost to the municipality.
“We can’t charge anything beyond our costs, and we have found these fees adequate to cover our costs,” Maley said.
Councilman Joseph S. Barsa called for a delay, saying, “Our financial advisory committee has recommended that we increase fees to some extent. . . . It’s incumbent on us to satisfy ourselves that the fees are adequate.”
Barsa said the best way to check that is to compare what other cities charge. The rest of the council agreed, directing the city staff to bring that information to the next council meeting.
