Valleywide : Bird Auction to Raise Nest Egg for Research
Organizers of a bird auction in Sherman Oaks today hope the event will raise more than chicken feed for a trio of avian causes.
The West Valley Bird Society’s fourth annual benefit auction will offer birds such as princess parrots, blue-crowned conures and cockatiels as well as bird-related products such as toys, artwork and books.
Bird auctions “are not very common,” said Kathleen Baker, vice president of the club. “This is the fourth time we’ve done it and we’re the only bird club I know of that is doing this.”
Proceeds will benefit the American Federation of Aviculture, the Raptor Rehabilitation and Release Program in Simi Valley and ongoing medical research at the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine. Researchers at the college are working on a vaccine for psittacine beak and feather disease, an AIDS-like virus among birds that is transmitted through feather dust.
Auction items were donated by businesses and individuals. Last year’s auction raised about $5,500.
The event is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. at the Van Nuys/Sherman Oaks Community Center, 5040 Van Nuys Blvd., Sherman Oaks. Admission is free.
