Despite protests and petitions from residents, the City Council has approved the rezoning of a former school site for a housing project.
The Planning Commission in June approved the project, which would put 58 homes on nine acres. More than 100 residents protested that the property would be too crowded and that the average lot size--about 6,000 square feet--would be too small.
The council, however, voted for the zoning change for the former Gill school site, which is north of McFadden Avenue and west of Golden West Street.
The developer, Presley Cos., has agreed to pay for $175,000 in park improvements to nearby Greer Park, including a new basketball court, picnic benches and playground equipment.
