ROCK KNOCK

I cannot let Lori Baker Schena’s July 16 letter on Robert Hilburn pass without a comment. I, and many music lovers I know, think that The Los Angeles Times’ pop music critics make up the weakest department in the paper. I read the same article about Neil Young by Hilburn and, typically, learned absolutely nothing new. (Hilburn wishes he was Ralph Gleason!)
I attend the same concerts as these critics and, afterward, cannot recognize the concert they describe in the paper. I no longer read the articles on concerts I do not attend, because I know the review will not reflect what actually happened.
July 17’s Orange County Calendar had an article on Boston, the headline of which stated: “Pompous yet vapid.” That sounds like the description of a wine, not a rock ‘n’ roll concert. If you want to know what really happened at a concert, don’t read The Times.

Yes, great music is timeless. That’s why “Everydays,” “Questions,” “Bluebird,” “For What It’s Worth” and other songs “still” sound so good: They were written by an underrated singer/songwriter/guitar player--Stephen Stills.
