AMERICAN LEAGUE ROUNDUP : Hershiser Looks Strong as Indians Win

Orel Hershiser wasn’t upset about giving up two homers.

Maybe because the solo shots by Jay Buhner and Mike Blowers were half of the four hits surrendered by Hershiser over seven strong innings at Seattle.

Manny Ramirez hit a two-run homer and drove in three runs and Paul Sorrento added a solo homer for Cleveland in a 5-2 victory over Seattle on Sunday.

“This is a good offensive ballclub and a tough offensive ballpark, so I felt lucky to give up only two homers,” Hershiser said.

Eric Plunk pitched the eighth, and Jose Mesa finished for his 29th save in 29 chances.

Baltimore 8, Chicago 3--Cal Ripken had four runs batted in and the Orioles took advantage of six walks by White Sox starter Jason Bere at Baltimore.

Brady Anderson had three hits, a walk, two stolen bases and scored twice for the Orioles, who led, 7-1, after three innings.

New York 7, Minnesota 4--Mike Stanley benefited from the quirky Metrodome, driving in four runs on two odd extra-base hits.

Stanley brought home two runs in the fourth when his hit bounced over right fielder Kirby Puckett’s head for a two-run triple.

In the sixth inning, Stanley hit a drive to left-center that left fielder Marty Cordova misplayed when he lost the ball in the ceiling for a two-run double.

Texas 7, Boston 6--Otis Nixon’s drive to left field clanked off Mike Greenwell’s glove, helping Texas score two more runs off a Boston mistake and giving the Rangers the victory at Arlington, Tex.

The Red Sox, who lost a four-run lead in part because of consecutive errors on grounders to the mound in the fifth, had just tied the score, 5-5, in the seventh on Willie McGee’s homer, Boston’s fourth solo shot of the game.

Nixon broke the tie with a soft hit to left that Greenwell lost in the lights. Junior Ortiz and Mark McLemore scored.

“We’ve had quite a few breaks go against us lately,” Texas’ Will Clark said. “Tonight, we had some go our way.”

Oakland 11, Toronto 3--Geronimo Berroa homered and drove in four runs as the Athletics routed the Blue Jays at Toronto.

Berroa hit a two-run homer in the third and barely missed another when the A’s added three more runs in the seventh, sending a two-run double off the top of the wall in left.

Kansas City 3, Detroit 2--Vince Coleman hit a two-run homer at Kansas City to help former replacement player Scott Anderson get his first major league victory.
