Kiridashi Wins Second Leg of Canadian Triple Crown

Kiridashi beat Regal Discovery by two lengths Sunday in the $148,393 Prince of Wales Stakes, spoiling Regal Discovery’s bid to capture Canada’s triple crown for 3-year-olds.

Kiridashi, ridden by Larry Attard, covered the 1 3/16 miles in 1:55 and paid $5.26, $2.56 and $3.36. The bay colt by Bold Ruckus was fourth in the opening leg, the Queen’s Plate at Woodbine in Toronto on July 9.

With the victory, Barb Minshall became the first female trainer to saddle a winner in the series.

Regal Discovery, owned in part by Vancouver Canuck goalie Kirk McLean, finished a neck in front of Mt. Sassafras and paid $2.41 and $2.41.

Todd Kabel, who rode Regal Discovery to victory in the Queen’s Plate at odds of 9-1, never got in front of Kiridashi on Sunday.

The third leg of the triple crown is the 1 1/2-mile Breeders Stakes on Aug. 20 at Woodbine.
