BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE MAJOR LEAGUES : Orioles Add Power, Activate Hoiles

The Baltimore Orioles activated catcher Chris Hoiles from the disabled list. Hoiles had 10 homers and 29 RBIs when he went on the 15-day disabled list July 17 because of a strained left hamstring. He suffered the injury while running out a hit July 17 in the second inning of a game against Kansas City. To make room for Hoiles in the lineup, the Orioles optioned catcher Cesar Devarez to triple-A Rochester.

Danny Darwin, who pitched for Texas from 1978-84, signed a minor league contract with the Rangers. Darwin was 1-8 with a 7.62 ERA in 13 games with Toronto before being released July 18. Also, outfielder Lou Frazier, who was acquired by Texas in a trade with Montreal a day earlier, was called up by the Rangers. Texas optioned pitcher Terry Burrows to triple-A Oklahoma City. . . . Kevin Mitchell will remain with his Japanese team for the rest of the season, said Joe Sroba, Mitchell’s agent. Mitchell had left the Daiei Hawks in May, after sitting out two weeks because of a sore right knee. He returned to the team on July 20, after undergoing an examination and some rehabilitation in the United States. . . . Hall of Fame pitcher Early Wynn, 75, was released from a Cooperstown, N.Y., hospital on Monday, a day after complaining of chest pains.
