North Hollywood : Man Slain in Car by Gang Suspect

Share

A 20-year-old Van Nuys resident died a day after being shot in the head by a suspected gang member, police said Tuesday.

Fortino Sandoval was sitting in a double-parked car with a friend at the intersection of Hart Street and Morella Avenue about 12:30 a.m. Monday when a man walked up to the car and asked the men, “Where you from?” which is slang for “What gang are you in?” said Los Angeles Police Detective Mike Coffey.

When Sandoval denied gang membership, the man fired a semiautomatic handgun into the car, hitting Sandoval in the head, Coffey said. He was taken to Northridge Hospital Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead Monday night.

“The victims are not gang members,” Coffey said.
