Transient Dies After Jump Off Freeway Overpass
A transient jumped from a Ventura Freeway overpass to his death at the peak of rush hour Tuesday, shutting down a stretch of the busy roadway for more than an hour, authorities said.
The transient was pushing a cart along Glendale Avenue just before 5:30 p.m., Glendale Police spokesman Chahe Keuroghelian said, “and he stopped for a moment, then set the shopping cart aside and jumped over the bridge.”
The man, who appeared to be in his 50s and carried no identification, landed on the windshield of a Cadillac heading east on the freeway below, Keuroghelian said.
Police and California Highway Patrol officers closed two lanes of the eastbound freeway between the Glendale Avenue and Brand Boulevard on-ramps, and traffic backed up all the way to the transition from the Golden State Freeway in Burbank, Keuroghelian said.
The freeway was reopened about 6:45 p.m., he said.
