Share

A jewelry maker was shot and killed Tuesday morning while he was repairing his car in the driveway of his home, police said.

Ernesto Avellaneda, 40, was outside in the 900 block of Harmon Street about 8:30 a.m. when two men approached and an argument broke out, said Sgt. Dick Faust.

Avellaneda’s son, Robert, 20, told police that he was inside the house when he heard his father fighting with the two assailants.

When he went outside, he found Avellaneda on the driveway bleeding to death. The two gunmen then fled north on Harmon on foot, police said. Nothing apparently was stolen, Faust said.

Avellaneda, who was shot once in the chest and once in the hand, died at the scene, Faust said.

Authorities later arrested one of the suspects, a 24-year-old man who police declined to identify.
