Van Nuys : Quake-Hit Apartment Building to Reopen
An earthquake-damaged apartment building repaired with $300,000 in federal money distributed by the Los Angeles Housing Corp. will have a grand reopening today (8/3), said Benjamin Efraim, the project manager overseeing earthquake repairs.
The 11-unit building at 14150 Sherman Way in Van Nuys had been yellow-tagged after the January, 1994, Northridge earthquake. With new owners, repairs on the building began in March.
Under terms of the federal loan, 40% of the apartments must be rented to low- or moderate-income families, said Efraim, whose company, Beptal Inc. Handyman-Services, is handling three other similar projects in the Valley.
The city also required that the company buy services and supplies in the neighborhood around the project, he said.
The 34-year-old building did not have to be torn down before being rebuilt. The current owners are a partnership going by the name the 14150 Sherman Way Limited Partnership, a collection of Valley businesses, Efraim said.
A local Thai restaurant will cater the open house, to be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Efraim said.
