OXNARD : Goals 2000 Grants Go to 5 County Districts

Five Ventura County school districts have won a total of $407,040 in federal grants aimed at helping public schools achieve eight national education standards, educators said Wednesday.

The largest grant under the federal Goals 2000 project is $193,570, earmarked for the Oxnard Union High School District, said Supt. of Schools Charles Weis, who announced the grants.

Simi Valley Unified School District will receive $71,320, Ventura Unified School District will get $54,800, and Conejo Valley Unified School District is slated to receive $52,080.

Ojai Unified School District also qualified, for a $35,270 grant, Weis said.

Goals 2000 sets broad objectives for improving education nationwide by the turn of the century but gives local school districts flexibility in determining how best to meet those goals, he said.

Student competency in math, reading and writing, parental involvement in education, school safety and drug-free schools are among the goals stated in the educational reform plan, Weis said.
