Plea Entered in Bad-Check Case

An ex-convict with a history of passing bad checks pleaded not guilty Thursday in Van Nuys Municipal Court to charges that could return him to state prison for eight years, prosecutors said.

Gregg Dohring, 34, of Studio City entered the plea before Judge Michael E. Knight, who set bail at $95,000 and scheduled an Aug. 14 preliminary hearing.

In court papers filed Wednesday, prosecutors charged Dohring with making bogus checks, passing two fake checks and possessing both methamphetamine and marijuana.

Included in the charges was mention of Dohring’s three prior convictions, including one in 1986 for passing a bad check and another in 1993 for possessing a driver’s license with the intent to commit a forgery.

Deputy District Atty. James Bozajian said Thursday that Dohring was arrested recently after forging from scratch, and then passing, checks that resembled authentic business or payroll checks.
