Too Many Pets
* The article “Bedeviled by the Burden of a Most Thankless Task” (July 23) about euthanasia at the Orange County Animal Shelter was heart-wrenching. We are fortunate that there are people like Sharon Linsmeier who give these ill-fated dogs and cats some warmth and love before they are euthanized--in many cases the only bit of love that these homeless animals have ever known.
However, it is time for everyone to realize the blame they share in the needless, senseless death of so many animals. Spaying and neutering of animals is the only answer to this problem.
By allowing our animals to have litters, we are contributing to the overpopulation of domestic dogs and cats--there are simply not enough homes for them all. All shelters should neuter before an animal is released for adoption. This would be more expensive in the short run, but in the long run, the savings would be tremendous.
