The assumption that the NAACP is no longer relevant or necessary because it is 86 years old is wrong (“Can Myrlie Evers-Williams Make the NAACP Matter Again?” by Sam Fulwood II, June 25). Anyone who is convinced that the NAACP has aged out probably also believes that senior citizens are no longer necessary or relevant--that there’s no place for them in society. Now where would America be if the founding fathers and their followers had dumped the Constitution after a mere 86 years?
As a young woman, Evers-Williams stood fearlessly alongside with her soon-to-be-martyred husband Medgar Evers as they organized voter registration drives in the Mississippi Delta. Thirty years later, she again called upon her inner strength as she witnessed Byron De La Beckwith’s conviction for the Evers’ murder.
The NAACP’s new national leader has the perseverance and tenacity--and the support as well--to lead that organization into the 21st Century.
