PGA CHAMPIONSHIP NOTES : His Clothes May Be Borrowed, but He’s No Dummy on Course

How do you dress for success? Jose Maria Olazabal, whose luggage didn’t arrive when he did, needed a pair of trousers to play a practice round.

He went to the PGA Golf Shop near the first tee just before closing and told the clerk about his luggage. The shop didn’t sell pants. But the clerk took a pair of brown pants off a nearby mannequin and gave them to Olazabal. They fit.

Dodger pitcher Hideo Nomo was a guest of Riviera Country Club owner Naburo Watanabe. PGA General Chairman Dick Caruso quickly invited Nomo to play at Riviera, Dodger schedule permitting.

Bernhard Langer of Germany withdrew because of a sore back. He was replaced by alternate Steve Pate. Mark McNulty of Zimbabwe also withdrew and was replaced by Brian Henninger. The PGA field includes 56 of the top 60 players in the Sony rankings, missing only Langer, McNulty, Raymond Floyd and David Gilford.
