OXNARD : School Breakfast Program Extended
The Oxnard School District will offer free and reduced-price breakfasts to needy children in every school in the district for the first time, officials said.
Thanks to a federal grant, all 13 schools will be able to provide on-site breakfasts for the next three years, said Barbara Myers, assistant director of child nutrition.
Participants must fill out an application that school officials will use to determine whether parents will pay the full price of 75 cents, the reduced price of 25 cents or nothing at all, Myers said.
A typical breakfast will include milk, juice and an item like a waffle or pancakes and sausage, she said.
Last school year, nine schools provided the breakfasts. This year, Emilie Ritchen, Christa McAuliffe, Lemonwood and Bernice Curren schools will be added, Myers said.
The $10,000 grant will be used to buy walk-in freezers, Myers said.
About 950 children took advantage of the breakfast program last school year, and about 8,000 took part in the free or reduced-price lunch program offered throughout the district, Myers said.
