Panel Backs Home Repair Code Changes

Share

The Simi Valley Planning Commission has supported a move that would grant relief to some residents who, under city rules, cannot legally add onto their homes.

Currently, residents whose homes no longer fit the zoning for their property--for example, people who own homes on land zoned for commercial development--cannot build additions or repair their homes if the structures suffer more than 50% damage in a fire or other disaster.

A proposed series of municipal code amendments would lift those restrictions. In addition, the amendments would end an amortization process that determines how long residents of rezoned properties can continue living in their homes.

Several residents voiced their support for the measures at Wednesday’s commission meeting, saying the restrictions had made it impossible for them to obtain home loans.

The changes affect more than 100 properties citywide, many near the intersection of Tapo Street and the Simi Valley Freeway.

The City Council must vote on the changes.
