COSTA MESA — The board president of the Mesa Consolidated Water District, whose eligibility was the subject of some controversy, resigned Thursday night.
Tom Nelson said he was resigning “at the urging of my family and friends, who can see more clearly than I this was not good for my health.”
The issue of Nelson’s eligibility was raised last year when he was a candidate for a board seat. He has a home in Seal Beach, which is outside the district served by Mesa Consolidated, but says his primary residence is a converted office in Costa Mesa.
The secretary of state’s office concluded that Nelson was “a valid candidate for office.”
Since then, however, the board has discussed guidelines for establishing eligibility.
Nelson has been on the board for 17 years.
