NO BUTTS: Among the supporters of President Clinton’s push to curb teen-age smoking is the American Lung Assn. of Ventura County. “By the time we reach kids 9 or 10 years old, a lot of them have already started smoking,” warns Executive Director Edna V. Ray. The group’s goal is to keep kids away from cigarettes as long as possible. “If they abstain from starting until they start college, that greatly reduces the likelihood of them ever beginning.”

GOOD CAUSE: Simi Valley employees will have a chance to contribute to the family of that city’s first police officer killed in the line of duty (B1). A memo will be included in each municipal paycheck passed out today letting workers designate a part of their annual leave time to the Michael Clark Trust Fund. “Knowing the closeness of the city family, I fully expect we’ll see tens of thousands of dollars” donated, says City Manager Mike Sedell.

INSPIRING FANS: When Raiders quarterback Vince Evans and center Dan Turk signed autographs for a group of local students at the team’s Oxnard training camp Thursday, the signatures came with a special footnote: Bible verses (B1). “They look to me as a role model,” Evans said. “I can pass this on to kids and maybe get them to explore the Bible.” The visit with the football players was a reward for the students’ improved grades and contributions to student leadership.

MOONLIGHTING: Being environmentally conscious didn’t pay for two men wanting to make a little extra money after hours--literally (B5). James F. Hanson and Jeffrey D. Sevier, who worked for a Ventura print shop, decided to produce bogus $5, $10 and $100 bills. Seems the guys were unhappy with the quality of some of their work, so they disposed of a batch of funny money by dropping it in a recycling bin. Someone at the recycling center spotted the phony cash and called police, who tracked down the counterfeiters. Hanson is heading to jail for a year; Sevier is to be sentenced next month.
