MAJOR LEAGUE ROUNDUP : Braves Rally Again in Ninth

Atlanta’s Javier Lopez had a run-scoring single with two out in the bottom of the ninth inning Thursday to give the Braves a 2-1 victory over the Cincinnati Reds at Atlanta, the 19th time this season Atlanta has won in its final at-bat.

With the score tied, 1-1, Fred McGriff and David Justice singled, putting runners at first and third. Lopez singled against Hector Carrasco (2-4).

Reliever Mark Wohlers (5-3) got the victory with one scoreless inning. Brave starting pitcher Tom Glavine hit his first major league homer and gave up one unearned run and five hits in eight innings.

San Diego 3-5, Chicago 2-12--Steve Trachsel won at Wrigley Field for only the second time in 22 starts, leading the Cubs to a victory in the second game of a doubleheader against the Padres.

Mark Grace hit a two-run double and a two-run triple for a season-high four runs batted in, and Sammy Sosa added a three-run homer in the second game for Chicago.

In the first game, Willie Blair (5-1) won in only his second start of the season, scattering six hits over six innings.

San Francisco 8, Pittsburgh 7--The Giants blew a seven-run lead and then needed an eighth-inning double by Barry Bonds to defeat the Pirates at Candlestick Park.

J.R. Phillips homered twice and drove in five runs for the Giants. Bonds also had a two-run triple in the fourth.

The Pirates tied the score in the eighth on Orlando Merced’s RBI single, capping a three-run rally. Jeff King hit a grand slam in the seventh and Steve Pegues added a two-run homer in the eighth.

Montreal 6, Houston 2--Butch Henry pitched eight strong innings, retiring 13 in a row in one stretch, and the Expos beat Houston to extend the Astros’ losing streak to five games. Henry, who gave up 31 hits in his three previous starts, struck out five and walked one in eight innings. Florida 3, Colorado 2--The Marlins rallied for two runs in the seventh inning and another in the eighth on Steve Decker’s sacrifice fly to beat the Rockies at Miami. It was the seventh consecutive home victory for the Marlins, who have won 11 of their last 13.

New York 5, Philadelphia 1--The Mets scored four times in the 11th to beat the Phillies, sweeping a series in Philadelphia for the first time since 1991.

AMERICAN LEAGUE

Cleveland 10-5, New York 9-2--The Indians overcame Mike Stanley’s three home runs in the opener and Darryl Strawberry’s first homer for the Yankees in the nightcap to sweep the Yankees at New York.

Toronto 8, Milwaukee 4--Paul Molitor had a pair of RBI doubles and Shawn Green had three RBIs as the Blue Jays got a season-high 17 hits to beat the Brewers at Milwaukee.

Boston 11, Baltimore 1--John Valentin powered the Red Sox to their eighth win in a row with two home runs and five RBIs at Boston.

Texas 7, Detroit 2--Pitching a home game for the Rangers for the first time in 11 years, Danny Darwin allowed two hits in six innings in the victory over the Tigers.
