Stadium Officials Won’t Change Security at Big A

Anaheim Stadium officials will not alter security after Thursday’s baseball-throwing incident at Dodger Stadium, Phil Larcus, Anaheim Stadium’s operations manager, said Friday.

The Dodgers forfeited their game against St. Louis after fans began throwing baseballs onto the field with one out in the ninth and the Cardinals leading, 2-1. The baseballs had been given to fans as a promotion.

“We control what’s brought into the stadium, but I don’t know how to determine when someone is going to take a notion to throw a give-away like last night,” Larcus said.

The Angels have had two incidents in recent years.

In 1993, fans threw red and blue baseballs, given away as a promotion, during a fight between the Angels and Toronto Blue Jays. This season, fans threw promotion seat cushions onto the field after pitcher Mitch Williams gave up a three-run homer against Boston.

“You give away something that you think the fans want in their possession,” Larcus said. “You can’t anticipate throwing baseballs onto the field.”
