Power Failure Hits Glendale

Share

A midday power failure in most of Glendale darkened traffic signals, silenced emergency radios, shut down air conditioners and briefly trapped shoppers in elevators at the sprawling Glendale Galleria, police said.

But the chaos was short-lived, and full power was restored in little more than an hour.

At the Galleria, the outage temporarily closed the Broadway and Nordstrom department stores, and fire officials rescued several people from elevators.

“It started to warm up, but it wasn’t too bad,” said Glendale Police Officer Craig Tweedy, stationed at the department’s Galleria substation.

The power outage also caused traffic backups when signals went out, and police officers were sent to major intersections to help move cars along. No serious accidents or injuries were reported.

A spokesman with the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power said the outage apparently occurred after a DWP worker cut off power for three minutes to the DWP’s Air Way receiving station, which serves parts of Glendale.
