Contractor Sentenced in Tax Case

A building contractor who does work for the city of Compton and who pleaded guilty to tax evasion charges was sentenced Monday to 2,500 hours of community service and ordered to pay $101,673 in back taxes.
Jose Chinchureta, who won multimillion-dollar construction contracts for municipal projects in Compton, admitted in May that he underreported his income from 1989-92.
The Los Angeles contractor and owner of B & A Construction is among several people targeted by the FBI and the Internal Revenue Service in a probe of alleged corruption at Compton City Hall.
According to investigators, Chinchureta’s false tax returns were discovered during an investigation of Rep. Walter Tucker III (D-Compton), who served as mayor of Compton from 1990-92, and former City Councilwoman Patricia Moore, who held office from 1989-93.
