A 23-year-old man was shot to death by someone who walked up to his car Sunday night, and then was pushed out of the car by his own passenger, authorities said.

Witnesses told the Orange County Sheriff’s Department that two cars drove alongside Armando Carranza of Anaheim as he and the passenger sat in his car on Dale Street just north of Cerritos Avenue about 9:15 p.m. A man got out of one of the cars, put a handgun to Carranza’s head and shot him.

Police said the passenger then opened the driver’s side door from the inside, pushed Carranza out and drove north on Dale Street in his car, leaving Carranza in the street. Paramedics took Carranza to UCI Medical Center in Orange, where he died at 12:21 a.m.

Lt. Ron Wilkerson said the Sheriff’s Department did not yet know if the incident was an intended carjacking or was gang-related.

“Everything is very vague right now,” Wilkerson said. Neither the killers nor the passenger in Carranza’s car have been identified, he said.
