NATIONAL LEAGUE : Sanders Hits Three Homers, Rockies Fall
Reggie Sanders took advantage of every mistake Colorado pitchers made--and there were plenty to go around the ballpark seats.
Sanders homered in his first three at-bats Tuesday night, leading a four-homer attack that swept the Cincinnati Reds to an 11-3 victory over the Rockies at Cincinnati.
Sanders hit a two-run homer and a solo homer off rookie Bryan Rekar and added a solo shot off David Nied, becoming the first Red player to hit three in a game since Barry Larkin in 1991.
Mike Stanley of the New York Yankees hit three homers in a game last Thursday in the first game of a doubleheader against Cleveland.
“When he’s hitting the ball in batting practice, I’ve seen him hit only half the ball and still hit it out,” Assistant Manager Ray Knight said. “That last one tonight, he didn’t get all of it, and he still put it in the seats. When he gets the ball up in the air, he can still hit it out of the ballpark.”
Sanders wasn’t around to talk about his three-homer binge--he had an appointment and left shortly after the game ended.
The Rockies fell to 1-7 on their road trip, which has cost them first place in the NL West.
Atlanta 4, Florida 1--Tom Glavine won his seventh game in his last eight decisions, as the Braves remained unbeaten in seven games against the Marlins this season.
Glavine (11-5), who retired 15 in a row between the second and seventh innings, allowed four hits in eight innings at Atlanta.
San Francisco 4, St. Louis 2-- Deion Sanders scored two runs and went three for three at San Francisco as the Giants handed the Cardinals their fifth loss in a row.
Jamie Brewington (3-1) allowed two runs on four hits in 5 2/3 innings. He walked four and struck out one as the Giants won their third in a row.
Montreal 3, New York 1--David Segui, playing against the Mets for the first time since they traded him, hit a three-run homer in the first inning at New York as the Expos won their fourth in a row.
Segui, traded because the Mets wanted to use Rico Brogna at first base, is batting .330 and his 43 runs batted in match his total for last season.
Philadelphia 3, Houston 2--Mark Whiten hit two home runs as the Phillies beat the Astros at Houston.
Whiten, obtained from Boston on July 24, hit a two-run homer in the first inning and his solo homer in the sixth broke a 2-2 tie.
Phillies outfielder Tom Marsh was removed from the field on a stretcher and taken to a hospital following a seventh-inning collision at second base with shortstop Orlando Miller.
A team spokesperson said Marsh’s condition had “stabilized” but gave no other information.
Pittsburgh 6, San Diego 0-- Rookie Steve Parris pitched a seven-hitter for his first major league shutout as the Pirates ended a six-game losing streak by beating the Padres at San Diego.
Parris (5-4) walked two and struck out five in his first complete game. He had not pitched beyond the seventh inning in his 11 previous starts.
