Fifth-graders in the Garden Grove Unified School District will receive special instruction in violence prevention by police officers this fall.
The program is similar to the district’s Drug Abuse Resistance Education program and will be taught by officers from the Garden Grove Police Department in 45-minute segments each day for six weeks.
“While DARE deals primarily with drugs and alcohol, this program is focusing more on violence and other illegal activities, like gangs and vandalism,” district spokesman Alan Trudell said. “For example, kids will learn if they spot a weapon how to respond. And [the program] also addresses life skills, like the consequences of choosing a route that’s unacceptable to society.”
The anti-violence program was approved by school board trustees this week.
