BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : ANGELS
The Ponce Lions of Puerto Rico’s winter baseball league have named former Angel manager Cookie Rojas as the team’s new head coach.
The hiring is part of a working agreement signed Thursday between the Lions and the Florida Marlins.
“We see this as a long term, mutually rewarding and productive relationship,” said David Dombrowski, Marlins’ general manager.
Rojas, 56, has been Florida’s third-base coach since the team’s inaugural season in 1993. The five-time All-Star played second base for the Cincinnati Reds, Philadelphia Phillies, St. Louis Cardinals and Kansas City Royals from 1962-77.
All Marlin coaches and players who participate in the winter league will hold their major league jobs. The league begins in October and finishes before the start of spring training.
