Postal Service Shuts Down Terminal Annex for Repairs
Fifty-five years of history ended Friday as Los Angeles Postmaster Jesse Durazo formally padlocked the doors at the Postal Service’s landmark Terminal Annex facility in Downtown Los Angeles.
The building, built under the auspices of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal and declared a National Historical Place in 1985, is being closed for renovations. From 1940 to 1989, it served as the city’s main post office until the Postal Service’s Processing and Distribution Center opened in South-Central Los Angeles.
Operations formerly performed at Terminal Annex will be conducted out of the new Alameda Station a block away.
Officials said renovations at Terminal Annex are expected to take five years.
