Westside : Wanted: Sleuths, No Experience Necessary
Attention, wanna-be sleuths in Rancho Park and Westwood: Here’s a chance to try your hand at police work.
The Los Angeles Police Department is looking for volunteers to staff a new surveillance program covering the two areas. Participants will get the opportunity to go on police stakeouts.
Some interested residents say they are attracted by the notion of catching criminals and solving crimes. “Hey, I read mystery stories,” said Terri Tippit, a Rancho Park resident who has had two cars stolen.
Tippit was one of about 18 Rancho Park and Westwood residents who heard about the plans during a meeting at the LAPD’s West Bureau.
Participants must undergo background checks and attend a training session given by the LAPD, in which they will learn about surveillance techniques and such things as how to use walkie-talkies.
Those who are chosen for the program will be sent out to observe locations where the police believe criminal activity may occur.
