Southeast : Cerritos OKs Design for Sheriff’s Station
Sheriff’s deputies can drive to Cerritos within minutes from their Lakewood station. But Cerritos residents want police to be closer, even if it means spending $9 million on a station.
The City Council recently approved the design of the station, which would house 32 deputies already working for Cerritos, plus 22 new employees.
Residents want police to have a more visible presence, officials say. The new station, on Bloomfield Avenue next to City Hall, is expected to be completed by early 1997. Since the building will include holding cells and a booking area, deputies would no longer drive suspects to the Lakewood station, officials say, quickening response times.
There is a trend among cities to build their own sheriff’s stations, said Lakewood Capt. Frank Vadurro. Paramount, Duarte and San Dimas all have built stations, but Vadurro said none of those cities spent as much as Cerritos.
