SUNLAND — The owner of a jewelry store on Foothill Boulevard shot and seriously wounded a would-be robber Friday morning, police said.
The store owner shot the 17-year-old suspect, who had a gun, when he and two others tried to rob the store in the 7800 block of Foothill Boulevard.
Los Angeles Police Lt. Joseph Garcia said the wounded suspect, a Palmdale resident, was shot in the upper torso. He is hospitalized and expected to recover. The two other robbers fled after the shooting and remain at large, Garcia said.
Garcia declined to release the name of the store or its owner, citing the notoriety and threats received by a West Los Angeles watch dealer who killed five armed robbers in two years.
But Dyle Henderson, the brother of the jeweler, confirmed that the attempted robbery and shooting occurred at his brother’s store, D.W. Henderson Jewelers.
Henderson said his brother is doing well. “He was pretty scared,” Henderson said.
At this point, Garcia said police are treating the shooting as self-defense.
