The former owner of an Ojai geophysical consulting firm was sentenced to two months in federal prison and fined $5,000 for failing to file tax returns, U.S. Atty. Nora Manella said Friday.

Richard W. Van Derck, 48, who now resides in Arizona, was given the sentence after pleading guilty to failing to file federal income tax returns for 1985, 1986 and 1988.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Barry Silverman handed down the sentence in Phoenix, Ariz., Manella said.

In addition to the prison sentence and fine, Van Derck was placed on five years probation, she said.

Van Derck owned and operated Terranova, a geophysical consulting firm that did business in the Ojai and Ventura areas, Manella said. He failed to report almost $80,000 in gross income earned in 1985, 1986 and 1988, and had unpaid taxes in excess of $57,000 for the years 1981-88, she said.

The case was investigated by the Criminal Investigation Division of the Internal Revenue Service in Oxnard.
