SIMI VALLEY : Man Arrested in Gun Incident at DMV

Share

A Panorama City man was arrested Monday afternoon on suspicion of brandishing a gun at the Department of Motor Vehicles office in Simi Valley, police said.

Ventura County sheriff’s deputies said Carlos Lopez, 21, was standing in line at the DMV on Alamo Street when he became angry, saying that Oscar Avila, 20, of Simi Valley, was staring at him.

Lopez yelled at Avila, and then left the building. When he came back inside, he showed Avila a four-inch revolver tucked in the waistband of his pants, sheriff’s deputies said.

Two other DMV customers, Kara Matthews, 18, and John Sjodin, 38, both of Simi Valley, came to Avila’s aid and tried to break up the argument. No shots were fired, and Lopez left the DMV. Police followed Lopez’s car down the California 118 and pulled him over in Moorpark.

Lopez was booked into Ventura County Jail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and possession of stolen property. Two passengers riding with Lopez were questioned and released.
