COLLEGE FOOTBALL / DAILY REPORT : UCLA : McElroy, Scott Vie to Replace Stokes

Life after J.J. Stokes has begun for UCLA and the Bruins will count on two inexperienced Los Angeles natives to pick up the slack at wide receiver.

Jim McElroy, a sophomore who attended Washington High, and Eric Scott, a sophomore transfer from Northwestern who graduated from Crenshaw High, team up to provide UCLA outside speed opposite All-American candidate Kevin Jordan.

Last season, McElroy caught nine passes for 111 yards. Scott redshirted after transferring from Northwestern, where he led the Wildcats in kickoff returns as a freshman.

“We have a pretty good group of guys at wide receiver,” Coach Terry Donahue said. “There’s a lot of competition going on there. Running opposite of Jordan, Jim McElroy is starting, but Eric Scott is right there, with Avery Anderson also getting a lot of work.”

McElroy also led UCLA in kickoff returns last season with a 20.9 yards-per-return average.

Another area of competition for the Bruins is at cornerback. Senior Teddy Lawrence and sophomore Javelin Guidry are listed as starters, but that may change with juniors Andy Colbert and Paul Guidry--Javelin’s older brother--pushing for playing time.
