The bloodied bodies of a man and a woman were found Thursday afternoon, sprawled on the floor of an abandoned catering truck parked on an East Los Angeles residential street, authorities said.

Construction workers found the bodies shortly after 12:30 p.m. in a large white truck in the 4500 block of East 2nd Street, just east of the Long Beach Freeway, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy Angie Prewett.

The victims were identified as Jorge Ambrosio, whose family owns the catering truck, and Minerva Aguilar. Authorities said the pair had been shot.

Neighbors told investigators that a resident saw a man running from the scene shortly after noon, but Prewett said it has not been confirmed that the man jumped down from the passenger seat.

“It could have been somebody who happened upon the scene and then ran away,” Prewett said. “We just don’t know.”

It was unclear whether the couple were robbed. Investigators spent part of Thursday interviewing customers at the catering truck’s last known stop before the discovery of the bodies, but authorities would not say where that location was.

“This is a pretty quiet neighborhood,” said 13-year-old Edgardo Garcia. “I’ve lived here since I was born and nothing like this has ever happened, not around here. The only crime we have is graffiti.”

Authorities said it was too early to tell if the killings were related to an unsolved 1991 case in which five North Hollywood catering truck workers were found slain execution-style--stabbed, shot and beaten to death.
