Clearing the Air About Helicopter Regulations

Share

* On July 25, the Los Angeles Board of Airport Commissioners (BOAC) met in the San Fernando Valley to discuss and respond to community concerns regarding Van Nuys Airport. The commission voted unanimously to implement eight recommendations to mitigate the impact of helicopter operations on residents.

This is to clarify one of the proposals mentioned in your July 26 story, “Panel Backs New Aircraft Limitations for Van Nuys.” As was clarified at the commission meeting, the BOAC is not requesting that a new helicopter corridor or route be established over the Ventura Freeway.

As depicted in the Los Angeles Helicopter Route Chart, the Ventura Freeway, along with most other freeways in Southern California, is already designated by the Federal Aviation Administration as a primary helicopter route. Rather, the BOAC is requesting the FAA establish a higher minimum helicopter altitude over the Ventura Freeway in proactive approach to reducing the impact of helicopter operations on local residents.
