Countywide : Tustin Base to Host Two Running Events
Civilians will have two opportunities to run with the Marines on Sept. 8 and 10 when the Tustin Marine Corps Air Station hosts the grueling “Volkslauf Mud Run” and the considerably cleaner “Run Through the Hangars.”
The 14th annual Volkslauf (People’s Run) will get underway at noon Sept. 8 on a 6.2-mile, military-style obstacle course. The challenges will include six-foot walls to be scaled and waist-deep mud in the quarter-mile “Rambo Death Ditch.”
This is being billed as the last Volkslauf Run in Tustin, according to an event spokesman, because the hosts, the “Ridge Runners” of Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 163, are expected to be stationed at another air base next year.

The third annual “Run Through the Hangars” will begin at 8 a.m. Sept. 10 as part of an all-day open house at the air station.
This 5-K and 10-K race, hosted by Marine firefighters, will be held on a flat course laid out on the airfield and through two gigantic hangars that housed blimps used for anti-submarine patrols during World War II. The wooden hangars are designated as national historic landmarks.
