HUNTINGTON BEACH : School District Land Decision Postponed

A decision on development proposals for a prime 11-acre parcel of school district property at Warner Avenue and North Golden West Street has been delayed until Sept. 19.
Trustees of the Huntington Beach Union High School District, at a special weekend meeting, heard proposals from six developers for the district-owned land. The board decided, however, to delay a decision, Assistant Supt. Patricia Koch said.
The acreage, formerly the site of Wintersburg Continuation School, is located behind the district’s Ocean View High School. City officials have said the land has prime development possibility as a commercial site. Some residential developers have eyed the property, possibly for apartments or single-family homes.
Koch said a city government representative appeared at Saturday’s special meeting and urged the school board to choose commercial instead of residential development. Koch said the city official noted that commercial development would bring in more tax dollars to the city.
“The board did not make a final decision” on land development, Koch said, “but they have focused their interest.”
The district-owned land could bring in hundreds of thousands of dollars annually to the school system, Koch said.
