FULLERTON : Cutbacks Thin Ranks at College District

Share

Classes got underway this week in the North Orange County Community College District with fewer instructors and administrators under a leaner budget.

The Board of Trustees this month balanced the district’s $89.3-million 1995-96 budget by deciding not to replace employees who have retired or resigned.

Thirty-five instructors’ positions are among the jobs going unfilled. An additional 30 non-teaching jobs also are off the payroll. The moves will save the district about $1.5 million, officials said.

Consolidations also have been made in management. In the past, Fullerton College and Cypress College each had a disabled student services coordinator, a director of food services, a bookstore manager and a dean of admissions and records. Now, there is only one manager of each of those departments for the entire district, officials said.

Moreover, two vice presidents stepped down to take lower-paying jobs. One is now a counselor and the other an instructor.

Some of the lost jobs, mostly faculty positions, may open again for the 1996-97 school year, officials said.
