Los Angeles police officers fatally shot a 38-year-old man who had rampaged through an apartment complex with a semiautomatic pistol, officials said Monday.
The officers, all in uniform, arrived at the complex in the 13700 block of Hubbard Street about 11 p.m. Sunday in response to several 911 calls by residents who said David C. Hernandez was threatening them with a pistol, Lt. John Dunkin said.
The officers heard three gunshots, and began to track Hernandez through the complex by following the path of 911 calls reporting his location, Dunkin said.
Hernandez was eventually spotted in a parking garage, crouched behind a car. The officers tried to talk him into surrendering, Dunkin said, but he refused. Hernandez dashed out the front door of the garage, but ran into another group of officers. He turned and tried to dash out the back door, where he was confronted by the first group of police.
Hernandez pointed his 9-millimeter Ruger at the officers, who opened fire with their handguns and shotguns, Dunkin said. Hernandez was hit, fell to the ground, and was pronounced dead on arrival at a local hospital.
Officials identified the officers involved as D. Hurst, 27, and M. Ryan, 28, both five-year LAPD veterans; B. Morrison, 27, who has 1 1/2 years with the LAPD; and J. Bushey, 23, who has been with the LAPD for one year. Police say they are not certain whether all of the officers actually shot Hernandez.
