Ventura County coroner’s officials have identified a man struck and killed by a passing vehicle Tuesday as he was adjusting the contents of his pickup truck.

The victim was identified as Charles Beane, a 37-year-old Camarillo man with no known relatives in the area, Senior Deputy Coroner Craig Stevens said.

Beane had pulled to the shoulder of the Ventura Freeway as he was headed northbound down the Conejo Grade about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, the California Highway Patrol said.

The patrol said that a vehicle driven by William Martin Deshields of Camarillo struck Beane as he was adjusting the cargo in the bed of his truck. The accident delayed traffic along the freeway for more than an hour.

According to Stevens, Beane is survived by a sister and mother in Maine.
