SMALL FACES: Michael Stipe is expected to make a guest appearance on Patti Smith’s album-in-progress, the New York poet-rocker’s first album since 1988. . . .

On the heels of the “Spirit of ‘73” collection, Rock for Choice is sponsoring a benefit Christmas album, “Come All Ye Faithful,” with seasonal tracks from Blind Melon, Luscious Jackson, the Presidents of the United States of America, Mike Watt, Sponge (doing Prince’s “Another Lonely Christmas”) and Henry Rollins (a spoken “ ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas”), among others. L7 is contributing liner notes. . . .

Meanwhile, the Presidents of the U.S.A. have been added to the “Saturday Morning” TV themes album with “Road Runner,” and the band has a song on an upcoming “Live at the Crocodile Cafe” album showcasing young Seattle bands, produced by R.E.M.’s Peter Buck. . . .

Though Lenny Kravitz’s new “Circus” album isn’t in stores until next week, he’s already got another one in the can--an all-funk album recorded at Allan Toussaint’s New Orleans studio, featuring a version of the Beatles’ “Dear Prudence.” . . .

Travel tips around two musical birthday bashes: Gibson guitars will honor B.B. King’s 70th on Saturday with a show at Memphis’ Riverfront Stadium, also featuring Jimmy Vaughn, J. Geils, Elvin Bishop and Etta James, while Sammy Hagar will celebrate his 48th Oct. 18 and 19 at Cabo Wabo, the club he and his Van Halen mates own in Baja California, with performances by Los Tres Gusanos (The Three Worms)--Hagar, Van Halen’s Michael Anthony and former Hagar band drummer David Lauser. . . .

Bush, which has been performing R.E.M.’s “The One I Love” in concert, is talking to the Georgia band’s producer, Scott Litt, about producing its next album, with recording planned for early ’96. . . . Alice in Chains’ Layne Staley will make a guest appearance with the Seattle band 2nd Coming when that group performs at Tower Records on Sunset on Sept. 12. 2nd Coming is also set to play three Southland dates (without Staley) in October.*
