Las Posas Choice Has a Down Side

Share

* The article about choosing a name for the future Cal State campus in Ventura County mentioned that one of the proposed choices is Las Posas, the rationale being that the campus will be near the Las Posas Valley.

Those who favor the name Las Posas evidently don’t know what the words mean in English. According to my copy of the Collins Spanish Dictionary, “posas” means “backside” or “buttocks.”

It doesn’t take a great deal of imagination to guess what students at rival campuses will call those who attend Cal State Buttocks. I have a couple of great ideas for a name for the campus football team, but you probably wouldn’t publish them.

On reflection, I don’t think “Las Posas” is the ideal name for the new campus. Personally, I like the idea of Cal State Buenaventura. Referring again to my dictionary, I find that “buenaventura” means “good luck” or “fortune.” Isn’t that appropriate for a new campus and for the students who attend it?
