South Bay : THE MILKY WAY
Too many folks think low fat means no fat, so the publicly funded Beach Cities Health District is on a mission to give residents the real skinny on milk. Officials at the Redondo Beach-based agency will be working with the Center for Science and Public Interest--the nationwide advocacy group that told you about the high fat content of movie theater popcorn and some Chinese food--to get people in the beach cities to switch from whole and 2% milk to the 1% or nonfat variety. The health education agency is funded through money from Redondo Beach, Manhattan Beach and Hermosa Beach.
Carl Dreizler, district communications officer, said his office will conduct a series of supermarket taste tests during the winter campaign to demonstrate that most people can’t taste the difference between 2% and 1% milk.
