PIRU : Gift Allows School to Buy New Computers
With a $14,000 donation from the California State Jaycees, Piru elementary school will buy five new computers and new playground equipment for its students this week.
“We’re really excited with the donation,” said Principal Marsha Porter, adding that the school’s existing computers are more than 10 years old. “The money is going to make a tremendous difference for the kids.”
The money was raised by Jaycees chapters across the country for victims of the Northridge earthquake, said Walt Morris, a spokesman for the Jaycees chapter in Camarillo. The group chose the Piru school because the community suffered extensive damage during the quake, Morris said.
Porter said she and other school officials will shop for computers and playground equipment this weekend. The Piru school serves about 450 students from kindergarten to sixth grade and has about 20 computers, most of which are limited to word processing, she said.
School officials hope to spend $10,000 on five new computers and a variety of software programs. One of the new computers will be placed in the library for students to use for homework assignments. The remaining money will help buy new playground equipment.
The Piru elementary school is part of Fillmore Unified School District, which is one of the poorest in the county, Porter said.
