Update : * Follow-up on the news : IRVINE : Plan to Tax Property for Schools Dropped
School board trustees have dropped a proposal to tax residential and commercial properties to raise funds for education.
As the largest school district in Orange County’s failed investment pool, Irvine Unified had considered asking local voters to approve a parcel tax to help the district, which cut $2.2 million from this school year’s budget.
Officials had estimated that a $100-a-year parcel tax could bring the school district $3.6 million a year in additional revenue.
However, school board members voted this week not to pursue the plan after a study panel found insufficient community support.
