Share

The Chico Lind experiment didn’t pan out. Neither did much of anything else the Angels tried to make up for the loss of shortstop Gary DiSarcina, sidelined since Aug. 3 because of a torn ligament in his left thumb.

So Friday, they purchased Dick Schofield’s contract from triple-A Vancouver. Schofield, 32, was the shortstop on the Angels’ last division championship team in 1986.

To make room for Schofield, the Angels designated right-handed reliever Mike Butcher for assignment. Butcher was 6-1 with a 4.73 earned-run average in 40 appearances.

Damion Easley, who filled in for DiSarcina at shortstop, will return to second base. Lind, released Aug. 30 after a lackluster stint, and Rex Hudler had manned second base.
