Q&A; : What are the biggest cliches in California decorating?
According to interior decorator Michael Smith:
1. Uptightly, perfectly arranged sofa pillows that have been “karate chopped” on the top.
2. The 11-foot, white overstuffed sofa, with wrinkled, loose and dragging slipcovers.
3. Shabby, aristocratic look with cheap velvet slipcovers.
4. Gratuitous use of wrought iron: candlesticks, coffee tables and lamps.
5. Theme rooms, especially English country and Santa Fe.
6. Angels and mirrors painted with gold radiator paint.
7. Dried anything: flowers, reeds, wreaths and potpourri.
8. Faux-old, or fake looking tapestry carpets or pillows.
