South Bay : Redondo Beach Studies Offering Credit Card

Share

Residents in Redondo Beach might soon shop with a Visa or MasterCard touting the city seal.

The city treasurer’s office is looking into the possibility of offering a credit card that would give the city a percentage of card purchases, said Treasurer Ernie O’Dell. Revenue generated from the credit cards would go into a general city fund.

“It will work like the mileage plus cards or General Motors credit card,” O’Dell said. “A percentage of what’s spent will kick back.”

O’Dell said the city is talking to local banks about the proposal. He said they are trying to come up with a deal in which the consumer, bank and the city all benefit from using the card.

“If the consumer doesn’t benefit from this card, they won’t use it,” O’Dell said.

Councilman Robert Pinzler proposed the “affinity card” after reading about other cities, including Culver City, that were looking into city credit cards.
